Joey Barton says Keegan’s ‘bang on’ with opinion of female pundits at men’s game

Joey Barton has defended Kevin Keegan following his controversial comments regarding female pundits working on men’s matches.

Keegan was speaking on a recent tour where he discussed his opinions on females pundits working on men’s games, specifically on England matches. The former England player and manager claimed that it’s not ‘the same experience’ playing in men’s and women’s international games.

The winner of back-to-back Ballon d’Ors in 1978 and 1979 made the comments in from of a crowd of around 250 in Bristol, where he said: “I don’t like to listen to ladies talking about the England men’s team at the match because I don’t think it’s the same experience. I have a problem with that.”

Keegan received mixed response to his comments but he was given the support of his former player at Manchester City and Newcastle United, Barton, who posted a short message on Twitter which read: “Kevin Keegan. Ballon D’or winner 1978. England manager. He’s bang on.”

The 63-time England international clarified from his comments that he does think some female pundits ‘are better than guys,’ Keegan added: “The presenters we have now, some of the girls are so good, they are better than the guys. It’s a great time for the ladies.

“But if I see an England lady footballer saying about England against Scotland at Wembley and she’s saying, ‘If I would have been in that position I would have done this,’ I don’t think it’s quite the same. I don’t think it crosses over that much.

“There are some very, very good lady presenters and I’m working with one in two days’ time, Terry Yorath’s daughter, Gabby.”

Amid Barton’s backing, Keegan received fierce backlash from former Lioness and pundit Lianne Sanderson, who posted on Twitter: “I won’t be doing any interviews about Kevin Keegan’s comments. I won’t be bringing light to misogyny. He’s irrelevant. But I would absolutely “Love it” if he would shut up! Those comments are not needed. It’s a shame people feel threatened by some of us. Unlucky for those people!”
