Colorado high school football: How Top 10 teams fared in Week 2

Class 5A

1. Cherry Creek (2-0) won vs. Legacy, 42-14: The Bruins defense limited the Lightning to just 70 total yards offense, Jordan Herron ran in a pair of touchdowns and Brady Vodicka hooked up with Dawson Johnson on a 63-yard TD pass. Next week: at No. 8 Chatfield, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

2. Regis Jesuit (2-0) won vs. Kennedy Catholic (Burien, Wash.), 36-33: Albert Medina scored four touchdowns and the defense added a score as the Raiders knocked off the state runners-up from Washington’s largest classification. Next week: at No. 9 Arapahoe, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

3. Grandview (2-0) won vs. Fossil Ridge, 38-13: QB Liam Szarka put things away with a pair of touchdown passes in the third quarter that gave the Wolves a 31-7 lead and Grandview notched its second straight double-digit win to start the season. Next week: at No. 4 Ralston Valley, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8.

4. Ralston Valley (1-1) bye: A Week 0 participant, the Mustangs will face a Top 10 team for the third straight game when they return to the field next week. Next week: vs. No. 3 Grandview, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8.

5. Pine Creek (2-0) won vs. No. 7 Valor Christian, 31-17: Eagles quarterback Cameron Cooper hooked up with Elijah Roy on a 38-yard touchdown pass to start things off and put the game away with a 6-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter as Creek knocked off Valor for the first time in their last four meetings. Next week: at Vista Ridge, 1 p.m. Sept. 9.

6. Columbine (2-0) won at Freedom (Orlando, Fla.), 42-0: The Rebels defense submitted a second straight dominant performance and has now allowed just six points through two games and none over their last seven quarters. Next week: at Cherokee Trail, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

7. Valor Christian (0-2) lost at No. 5 Pine Creek, 31-17: Asher Weiner threw a pair of touchdown passes in the second half, the last pulling Valor within seven with 3:59 to go, but the defense couldn’t make a stop late as the Eagles fell to 0-2. Next week: vs. No. 10 Fairview, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

8. Chatfield (2-0) bye: The Chargers get an extra week to prepare for top-ranked Cherry Creek after getting wins in Week 0 and Week 1. Next week: vs. No. 1 Cherry Creek, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

9. Arapahoe (2-0) won vs. 4A No. 9 Heritage, 28-7: Charlie Eckhardt scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half and set up another with an interception in the second half in a tremendous all-around performance. Trajan Frasier’s 21-yard scoring run with 7:27 to go put the game on ice.  Next week: vs. No. 2 Regis Jesuit, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

10. Fairview (2-0) won vs. Lakewood, 49-0: The Knights put 42 on the board by the end of the second quarter, with Jace Hines’ short run the exclamation point to a dominant first half. Next week: at No. 7 Valor Christian, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

Class 4A

1. Palmer Ridge (2-0) won at No. 8 Mesa Ridge, 43-20: QB Derek Hester had 207 yards and two TDs on 12-of-16 passing and ran for 130 yards and a TD on 19 carries as the Bears jumped out to a 29-7 halftime lead and kept Mesa Ridge at arm’s length the rest of the way. Seniors James Weird and TJ Mabe combined for 177 yards receiving and each had an interception. Next week: vs. Lewis-Palmer, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

2. Broomfield (1-1) lost vs. 3A No. 4 Holy Family, 30-29: Holy Family quarterback Rylan Cooney threw three TD passes and ran for another as the 3A Tigers pulled off a stunner. The last of Cooney’s scoring throws pulled the Tigers within a point, then, after a penalty gave Holy Family another shot at a two-point conversion, he ran in the game-winning score. Four different players scored TDs for Broomfield, which was held to one field goal over the final two quarters. Next week: vs. Vista Peak Prep, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

3. Ponderosa (2-0) won vs. Chaparral, 42-14: The Mustangs outscored their cross-town rivals 21-0 over the final two quarters in a runaway victory. Next week: at Golden, 4 p.m. Sept. 8.

4. Erie (1-1) won vs. Mullen, 56-26: Blake Barnett had three TD passes, Ronin Ward scored running the ball and on a pick-6 and the Tigers got another pick-6 late. Next week: at No. 5 Montrose, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

5. Montrose (1-1) won vs. Fruita Monument, 58-15: Blake Griffin scored five touchdowns, Elijah Womack tacked on two and the Red Hawks exacted a measure of revenge for last year’s 31-14 loss at Fruita Monument. Next week: vs. No. 4 Erie, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

6. Loveland (2-0) won vs. Mountain View, 28-7: Trey Olsen ran in three touchdowns, two during a 21-0 Loveland first half, and Ryder Eastin added another TD in a win over their cross-town rivals. Next week: vs. Pomona, 7 p.m. Sept. 7.

7. Pueblo West (3-0) won vs. Pueblo County, 35-7: The Gavin Lockett show was in full effect, with the Cyclones quarterback running in three TDs and throwing for another to give West a 35-0 halftime lead that was too much for PC to overcome. Next week: vs. Fountain-Fort Carson, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

8. Mesa Ridge (1-1) lost vs. No. 1 Palmer Ridge, 43-20: The Grizzlies piled up 170 yards on the ground — Isaiah Jones had 66 on just eight carries — but couldn’t overcome a pair of interceptions, including a pick-6 near the end of the first half that put them in a 29-7 hole. Next week: vs. No. 10 Dakota Ridge, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

9. Heritage (0-2) lost at 5A No. 9 Arapahoe, 28-7: Tanner Terch hauled in a touchdown pass that pulled the Eagles with seven points with less than 10 minutes to go in the third quarter, but a pair of interceptions after that stalled Heritage’s momentum. Making matters worse, star safety and Nebraska commit Rex Guthrie was carted off the field late in the game after suffering an apparent injury. Next week: at Pueblo Central, 7 p.m. Sept. 7.

10. Dakota Ridge (1-1) won at East River (Orlando, Fla.), 40-0: QB Blake Palladino threw passing touchdowns to two different receivers and ran one in from midfield, while Stephen Price added a pair of rushing TDs in an Eagles rout. Next week: at No. 8 Mesa Ridge, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.

Class 3A

1. Lutheran (2-0) won vs. Mead, 35-15. Next week: at Discovery Canyon, 7 p.m. Sept. 8

2. Green Mountain (2-0) won at Severance, 28-6. Next week: at Mountain View, 7 p.m. Sept. 8.
